JAMES GOT TO HOLD A CHICKEN AND RIDE A HORSE FOR THE FIRST TIME. JUSTIN LEARNED HOW TO SWIM.
TREY SAID IT WAS…
THE BEST WEEK OF HIS LIFE!
These are just three of the hundreds of reasons why ForKids believes so strongly in the transformative power of summer camp. Camp is an incredible experience for any child. At ForKids, we know that for a homeless child, it’s even more than that – it’s life changing. For our kids, camp brings rst time experiences that other children nd commonplace like learning to swim, canoeing, riding a zip line and much more. From sleepless nights spent in shelters to nights spent in cars and on the streets, these campers have not had a fairy tale childhood. Each year, our sta continue to be amazed at the newfound con dence, focus, and determination the kids have when returning from camp. While we must continue to provide housing, case management, education and other vital services, opportunities like camp are critical to breaking the cycle of homelessness.
“Experiences that take you out of your norm cultivate intrinsic motivation that is not as easily measured as a math or reading score, but in the long term, can end up being one of the most critical factors for change. Nothing can take away their memories, or the experience.”
– Angela Graciani, ForKids Education Director
Whenever we get the chance to catch up with former ForKids kids, we ask what their best memories were at ForKids. Over and over we hear about summer camp. Years go by and it’s something they hold on to. Warren, ten years later, shared how it helped him to see that his world was much larger with much more potential. We know that every child has potential and if summer camp is something that can help them see that – count us in.
In summer 2017, ForKids hopes to send 75 children to summer camps in Southeastern Virginia thanks to the support of Pilot Media, Art Auction donors, and scholarships through various camps. Some of our summer camp partners providing full or partial sponsorships include Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast, Camp Chanco, Camp Idlewild, 4-H, Sail Nauticus, Virginia Zoo, Victory Soccer and Triple R.
